Libya Update

509 stranded Pakistanis evacuated from Libya by
special PIA flight – more flights to be sent

As per Prime Minister’s instructions, 509 stranded Pakistanis in Libya were successfully brought back to Pakistan, yesterday, through a special PIA flight. Earlier, over 2000 Pakistanis have been evacuated by land routes through the neighbouring countries. At a time when the security situation in Libya has deteriorated sharply and many essential services have become dysfunctional, conducting this massive operation has been a formidable task, only made possible by exceptional cooperation among the Embassy in Tripoli, PIA, Aviation Division, Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A Crisis Management Cell set up in the Foreign Office is coordinating this gigantic relief and evacuation operation, necessitated by the resumed in-fighting in Libya which has an expatriate Pakistani community of around 18000.

A number of additional flights are being organized to evacuate thousands of stranded Pakistanis in Libya. Over 1200 Pakistanis, mostly destitute, are currently housed at the relief camps setup by the Pakistan Embassy in Libya and the number is increasing by the day.
